Most homeowners choose asphalt shingles for their roof because they are durable, easy to install, and affordable. Asphalt shingles even come in styles and colors so they mimic the appearance of high-end slate, wood shake, or even tile shingles. That means homeowners will have many options when it comes to the color of their roofing shingles. Here is a simple guide to help you choose the best color of shingles for your roof.
It goes without saying that your roof is one of the most important parts of your home. If something goes wrong with your roof, it is going to affect the rest of your home, with problems like water damage and mold growth, or letting cold air in. Your roof is also one of the most expensive parts of your home and installing a new roof can be a major drain on your budget.
Most roofs in Denver will last 15-20 years, depending on the type of material used for the roof. With these simple tips, however, you can make your roof last as much as twice as long as this, saving you money on roof repairs and replacement services.
1. Clean Your Roof of Debris
If your roof is sloped, then most leaves and other debris will probably fall off of it quickly. However, if you have flatter parts on your roof or nearby trees, then debris can accumulate. As the debris starts to decompose, the moisture can cause damage to your roof shingles. You can prevent this by periodically sweeping the debris off of your roof. Invest in a good brush with a telescoping pole and this task can be done quickly and easily.
2. Clean Your Gutters and Gutter Drains
Without gutters, water would run haphazardly down your roof. Gutters channel the water so it doesn’t damage your home’s foundation or siding. If your gutters become severely clogged, the water can even run upwards to your roofing shingles! The water and debris buildup in the gutters can then cause some serious damage to your roof. So, do your home a favor and keep your gutters and gutter drains clean.
3. Trim Tree Branches
Have trees hanging over your roof? Be sure to trim back their branches! Otherwise, the tree branches can bang against your roof, gutters, and siding, causing expensive damage.
4. Replace Broken Shingles Quickly
If you notice that shingles are damaged, be sure to replace them as quickly as possible. The damage can spread to nearby shingles or lead to structural damage of your home.
5. Remove Snow
Colorado gets quite a bit of snowfall and this can damage some types of roof shingles. Using a roof rake with a telescoping wand, remove large snow drifts from your rooftop. Do NOT attempt to pry off ice sheets on your roof though; this might damage the shingles.
If you are a homeowner looking for a roofer in the Denver metro area, look no further than a Colorado Roofing Association member. On their website you can search for a professional roofer and rest assured knowing you are going to find a licensed and professional member who is an expert at roofing your home or building.
Colorado Roofing Association contractor members, upon joining the association, fulfill the following eligibility requirements:
Your roof is one of the most expensive parts of your home. It is wise to maintain such an investment. Here are three easy tips to prepare your roof for the upcoming cold and snowy winter months:
1. Look for damaged, loose or missing shingles that may leak during winter’s storms or from melting snow.
2. Check and repair breaks in the flashing seals around vent stacks and chimneys, too.
3. If your roof is flat and surfaced with asphalt and pebbles, rake or blow off fall leaves and pine needles, which hold moisture, says Bill Richardson, past president of the American Society of Home Inspectors, in Albuquerque. (Don’t sweep aside the pebbles; that will expose the asphalt to damaging sunlight.)

Wind damage to roofing is a very real concern for Colorado homeowners. At A & H Roofing we know this because we have seen and dealt with it.
The reason wind damage occurs is because although asphalt shingles are designed to resist damage from wind, all asphalt shingle roofs will deteriorate with age, and may eventually become prone to damage from wind. However, wind damage sometimes occurs when it perhaps should not – when the winds responsible for the damage weren’t truly “severe,” yet they were nonetheless responsible for considerable loss.
In other cases, wind damage may be attributable to more valid winds, but the severity of the loss will be greatly exacerbated by pre-existing conditions or defects in materials and/or workmanship. Workmanship: a good reason to hire A & H Roofing. We are experienced roofers who do the job right the first time.
A question we hear at A & H Roofing frequently is: Will insurance cover wind damage? The answer is maybe.
For example, siding or shingles suffering damage because of old age would probably not be considered a listed “peril” of homeowners insurance. The same logic might prevail when discussing the falling of a tree during a storm. Because a storm is listed as a peril (meaning it’s unpredictable), you would most likely be covered for all the damage, as well as the removal of the fallen tree. However, some of these coverages may have limits. If you want to avoid any possible issues, then take action early on to make your home less risk-prone.
Like in football, the best defense against wind damage is a good offense. You can avoid wind damage from a pre-existing conditioning by having A & H Roofing come out and inspect your roof when you buy your house and/or once a year. So give us a call and have us set you up for a relatively wind damage-free future.
A & H Roofing is proud to announce owner Tom Herman’s completion of the Tile Roofing Institute’s Installer Certification Program. Gary Herman, Estimator and Project Manager, carries the same certification.
TRI’s Installer Certification program is a one-day course designed to provide training on how to install tile roofs in compliance with current code requirements. The course is based on the ICC approved Installation Manual for Moderate Climate Regions.
At A & H Roofing, our desire is to be continually learning and becoming experts in our craft. We strive to be the best company possible for customers to turn to. Our goal is always continued education, continually honing new skills to provide the utmost in quality and professional work.
